2026.09.20
The Invisible Dog (New York City) and BUoY Arts Center (Tokyo) are thrilled to present a performance by Chatori Shimizu & devon osamu tipp, as part of NAFAS TOKYO.
This performance is part of NAFAS, an international festival exploring the relationship between art and food with an exhibition of 70 artists and a series of performances, workshops and events. Discover the full program here
TKTKKai (TKTK会), the duo project of composer-performers Chatori Shimizu (shō) and devon osamu tipp (shakuhachi), will perform a short, evening-length program of new musical compositions exploring expressions through bamboo using sound and taste. Drawing on the physical construction of their instruments, the abandoned bathtubs inside BUoY, and the space itself, their performance creates new, original music inspired by the bamboo instruments of shō and shakuhachi. As composer-performers, they will also offer the audience a “tasting” for each piece, prepared from a special mixture of seasonings and spices. In this way, their performance invites audiences to experience each piece through sound, taste, and space.
The performance, consisting of new and preexisting compositions for shō and shakuhachi — including “MR. PLUMBER” (2020) by Chatori Shimizu and “traces” (2022; rev. 2026) by devon osamu tipp — will last approximately 60 minutes and marks their first duo performance in Tokyo in over three years.
The ingredients used to create the taste for each piece will be handed out on a folded sheet of paper, in both English and Japanese. You may look at the ingredients, or simply enjoy the performance by experiencing the taste with your own senses. If you have any food allergies or restrictions, please check the paper and feel free to ask us any questions during the performance.
The performance will be followed by a Q/A with the artists
TKTK 会 is a duo project of shō player Chatori Shimizu and shakuhachi player devon osamu tipp. They draw on our training in traditional Japanese performing arts, music composition, and improvisation to ruminate on and expand the possibilities of their performance practice.
Chatori Shimizu creates experimental and interdisciplinary sound works through semi-autobiographical narratives, articulated as concert music, site-specific music, or kinetically enhanced music. His practice spans a wide range of methods, including instrumental composition, programming, electronic circuitry, videography, installation, improvisation, and movement-based art.
devon osamu tipp‘s music draws influence from their Japanese roots, experiences as a jeweler and painter, improvisations with plants, and studies of gagaku and hogaku. Their music focuses on rhythmic and timbral transmutation of cyclical materials as a way of reflecting on my past, while simultaneously interrogating their own role as a shakuhachi player participating in different performance settings.
Shimizu and Tipp have been collaborating since 2018 and performed each other’s compositions as soloists at festivals such as Music on the Edge (Pittsburgh, PA 2018) and the Oh My Ears Festival (Phoenix, AZ 2021) and Unerhörte Musik (Berlin, Germany 2022).
They debuted their duo collaboration at the Hochschüle für Musik Dresden in 2019 and have since presented several times in the Tokyo area.
