The Invisible Dog Art Center（ニューヨーク）とBUoY（東京）は、現代アート、食、パフォーマンス、そして様々な食にまつわる体験に焦点を当てた1ヶ月にわたるフェスティバル「NAFAS TOKYO2026」を開催致します。

2022年にニューヨーク市で好評を博した第1回に続き、NAFASは2026年9月4日から9月26日まで東京に上陸し、BUoYを、食という普遍的なテーマを軸に、展覧会、パフォーマンス、対談、食事、ワークショップ、そして多様な集いが繰り広げられる場へと変貌させます。

アラビア語で「ナファス（nafas）」は「息」という意味を持ちます。また、食を生命維持に必要な栄養以上の何ものか―寛大さ、創造性、想像力―へと変容させる稀有な能力をも指します。この考えに触発され、NAFASは「食」を、記憶、アイデンティティ、移住、儀式、エコロジー、労働、政治、歓待、そして身体を探索するための言語として提案します。また、私たちがどのように共に生きることができるのかを探求するための「媒体」としても捉えています。

The Invisible Dog Art Center の創設者兼ディレクターであるルシアン・ザヤンが、BUoYの代表兼芸術監督である岸本佳子と共同でキュレーションを手がける本フェスティバルには、日本、アメリカ、フランス、レバノン、ブラジル、スウェーデン、カナダ、ベルギー、ペルー、インドネシア、香港、イランから、アーティスト、パフォーマー、作家、シェフなど計70名が参加します。国際的な公募を通じて選出された参加アーティストたちは、視覚芸術、インスタレーション、パフォーマンス、映像、サウンド、社会参加型アートなど多岐にわたる分野において、既存の作品に加え、新たに委嘱されたプロジェクトを発表します。

1ヶ月間にわたり、本展はギャラリーの枠を超えて、パフォーマンス、アーティスト・トーク、上映会、料理ワークショップ、共同食事会、コンサート、家族向けアクティビティ、そしてアーティストと観客の出会いを促すための対談など、幅広いパブリック・プログラムを展開します。

また、このフェスティバルは、実験性、アクセシビリティ、文化交流に尽力する2つの独立した非営利団体による、国際的なコラボレーションの成果でもあります。2009年にブルックリンで設立されて以来、The Invisible Dog Art Center は、学際的な芸術活動と地域社会との関わりを推進してきました。BUoYは、東京において、新進の芸術活動や実験的なパフォーマンスのための最もダイナミックなアートスペースの一つとして今年の10月に9周年を迎えます。

両機関は、NAFASを展覧会としてだけではなく、アーティスト、観客、近隣住民、そして来場者が共通の体験を通じて出会う一時的なエコシステムとして構想しています。

このフェスティバルでは、小さなインスタレーションから大規模な参加型プロジェクトまで、分野や文化を超えたコラボレーションに焦点を当てた作品が紹介されます。多くのプロジェクトは、BUoYのユニークな建築や東京そのものへのサイトスペシフィックな応答である一方、日本と海外の参加者による数ヶ月にわたる対話から生まれたものもあります。NAFASは、料理、食事、共有、呼吸といったありふれた行為が、いかにして芸術的かつ政治的な表現となり得るかを再考するきっかけとなることを祈っています。

The Invisible Dog Art Center (New York) and BUoY Arts Center (Tokyo) are proud to present NAFASTOKYO 2026, an ambitious month-long festival dedicated to the intersections of contemporary art, food,performance, and collective experience.

Following the acclaimed inaugural edition in New York City in 2022, NAFAS arrives in Tokyo fromSeptember 4 through September 26, 2026, transforming BUoY Arts Center into a place whereexhibitions, performances, conversations, meals, workshops, and communal gatherings unfold around oneuniversal subject: food.

In Arabic, nafas means breath. It also refers to the rare ability to transform food into something beyondnourishment—an act of generosity, creativity, and care. Inspired by this idea, NAFAS proposes food not simply as a necessity but as a language through which artists examine memory, identity, migration, ritual,ecology, labor, politics, hospitality, and the body.

Rather than treating food as a theme, NAFAS considers it a medium—a way of understanding how welive together.

Curated by Lucien Zayan, founder and director of The Invisible Dog Art Center, in collaboration with Kako Kishimoto, Artistic Director of BUoY Arts Center, the festival brings together 70 artists,performers, writers, chefs, from Japan, U.S.A, France, Lebanon, Brazil, Sweden, Canada, Belgium,Peru, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Iran. Selected through an international open call the participating artists present newly commissioned projects alongside existing works across visual art, installation,
performance, moving image, sound, and socially engaged practice.

Throughout the month, the exhibition expands beyond the gallery through an extensive public programthat includes performances, artist talks, screenings, culinary workshops, communal meals, concerts,family activities, and conversations designed to encourage encounters between artists and audiences.

The festival also marks a significant international collaboration between two independent nonprofit organizations committed to experimentation, accessibility, and cultural exchange. Since its founding in Brooklyn in 2009, The Invisible Dog Art Center has championed interdisciplinary artistic practices and community engagement. BUoY Arts Center has established itself as one of Tokyo’s most dynamic spaces for emerging artistic practices and experimental performance.

Together, the two institutions envision NAFAS not simply as an exhibition, but as a temporary ecosystem where artists, audiences, neighbors, and visitors meet through shared experiences.

As Lucien Zayan notes:

”Sharing food is one of humanity's oldest artistic gestures. Every meal creates choreography,conversation, memory, and community. With NAFAS, we invite artists to explore everything that surrounds eating—not only what is on the plate, but everything before, between, and after”

The festival features works ranging from intimate installations to large-scale participatory projects,zemphasizing collaboration across disciplines and cultures. Many projects are site-specific responses to BUoY's unique architecture and to Tokyo itself, while others emerge from months of dialogue between Japanese and international participants. More than an exhibition, NAFAS is an invitation to reconsider how acts as ordinary as cooking, eating, sharing, and breathing might become artistic and political gestures.
